What is Equine Assisted Therapy?

Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies is a general category of services that combine equine and human interaction.  Physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology with the use of an equine as a treatment strategy are categorized as Hippotherapy (HPOT) and Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy comprise the therapy portion.  Adaptive Riding (AR) and Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) comprise the activity side.

Services Offered:

Trio Therapy Partners currently offers specific services for both children and adults. These strategies utilize the equine as a therapeutic partner to achieve specific goals. The natural state of the horse allow them to offer a unique healing opportunity to the client as well as provide feedback regarding balance, stability and sensory input. Horses are also great teachers of self-awareness.


Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy (Hippotherapy)
Trio Therapy Partners provides physical and occupational therapy services to individuals and specializes in the use of equine movement and other strategies as part of a patients comprehensive plan of care.  By skillfully directing equine movement, each patient's neuro, sensory and movement systems are positively affected and engaged.  Integrated with additional neuro/sensoriomotor techniques, hippotherapy is an effective treatment strategy.  Common systems targeted by therapists are motor, sensory (including vestibular/balance), nervous and cognitive (including speech/language).  The limbic ,circulatory and respiratory systems are also positively affected.  An individual receives 2,000 organized, rhythmic, repetitions of three-dimensional movement when astride a horse that takes 100 strides per minute.  Hippotherapy can be an excellent strategy for a variety of diagnoses and impairments including but not limited to; Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, Cerebral Palsy, Developmental delay, Spina Bifida, Down's Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorders.  Currently, Trio has employs both a Physical and Occupational Therapist that offer services. 

Equine Assisted Learning
Equine Facilitated Learning (EAL) is an educational approach to equine assisted activities.  EAL is used to facilitate personal growth, social and emotional development, and other life skills through equine interactions. These activities can include ground work or mounted riding with our equine partners.  Benefits include but are not limited to; improved self-awareness, self-esteem and self-confidence, greater understanding of leadership and decision making skills. These activities can improve the understanding of an individual’s non-verbal skills and fosters a greater connection within relationships.  Equine Learning can benefit but is not limited to the following conditions and diagnoses; Attention Deficit Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorders, abuse issues, anxiety, self-harm behaviors, developmental, learning and emotional disabilities.  

Adaptive Riding
The primary focuses in AR are teaching riding skills to individuals whom may need specialized instruction and adaptations.  Adaptive riding can contribute positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of individuals with special needs.  Adaptive riding provides benefits in the areas of healthy education, sport and recreation.   

Experiential Education Group Services
Trio therapy partners provides experiential learning opportunities designed to promote, self-awareness, confidence, leadership skills and promote social and emotional wellness for participating individuals within the designated group.


Scheduling

Presently we operate in session blocks ranging from 8  to 12 weeks in duration February through November.   As with most therapies, Trio Therapy Partners has found that consistency pays off.  We recommend weekly appointments to receive the most benefit.   When the schedule allows we can accommodate alternative scheduling. Payment and Billing

We provide invoices at the end of each month or upon request for treatment services. When receiving occupational and/or physical therapy invoices will include diagnosis and treatment codes should you choose to submit the bill to your insurance company for reimbursement.  At this time we do not bill insurance directly.  We are happy to assist you if you have questions regarding this process.  Please contact us directly for more information regarding current fee schedule.

Other Funding Sources

Trio Therapy Partners offers a scholarship assistance based on financial need when available.   Please inquire for more information as certain criteria must be met in order to obtain scholarship funding.  Additionally, we accept funding from outside sources and have had families/individuals obtain funding through different local resources/agencies.
